Kids Catching Christ Lesson-Christian Flag and Pledge
I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag,
And to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands;
One brotherhood uniting all mankind,
In service, and in love.
Why do we fly flags? I think most of us can say we fly flags to show our love and devotion to our country or state. Some fly flags to show their beliefs. It is an outward expression of something that is important to us that we stand for.
We stand for the American Flag when we pledge. We stand for our state when we say the Texas pledge. We stand for the Christian Flag when we say the Christian pledge. The ideas behind them mean something deeply to us.
Why do we only say the Christian Pledge at VBS? As a Christian what the flag symbolizes is so important to me, so why do I not proudly fly this flag and say my pledge every day? I suppose mainly because I do not own a Christian Flag and truthfully the Christian Flag is the only flag not owned by one nation or one state. The Christian Flag’s only owner is God Himself.
So, what is the importance of the pledge? What does it mean to us? The fact that Jesus died for everyone, not just who are like us, but everyone ties into this flag being for ALL MANKIND. We pledge this flag because we understand the love behind it. Let’s break the pledge down line by line and discover the truths there.
I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag, -This means you are making a promise-You are promising to be loyal to the Christian beliefs and community and of course to our Father in Heaven. When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior you are uniting yourself with God forever. You are now considered one in spirit, so your allegiance is to God. “But whoever is united with the Lord is ONE with him in spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:17.
And to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands; - This ties into the first line. You are promising your loyalty to Jesus who saved us and to Heaven because that is our ultimate destination. Jesus said, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” John 12:26
One brotherhood uniting all mankind, - Being a Christian is a special privilege. When Jesus died on the cross, He died to save EVERYONE. This Christian banner or flag unites all of us who believe.
In service, and in love. - As Christians we are servants of God. We serve Him in all things. It is outward expression of love that sets us apart from others. As Christ lived, served, died, and loved; we are called to do the same. “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.” Ephesians 5:1
“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
The colors on the Christian flag are important like the colors on our American Flag and represent something to us. The flag is designed to represent all of Christianity. The cross on the flag is a huge symbol for us as Christians and is the most used. When seeing the cross, it is supposed to remind us of Jesus’s sacrifice. The red of the cross represents the blood Christ shed for us.
“And having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself.” Colossians 1:20
The white on the flag represents purity and forgiveness. In the Bible it uses the term “washed white as snow” to explain how our sins have been washed from us.
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” Isaiah 1:21
The blue of the flag represents baptism waters, heaven, or trust and faith. We are called to trust in the Lord with all we have. It is special to have faith, because it is the ultimate trust in God. To have faith is believing in things we know in our hearts to be true but can’t always see.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Next time you see a flag, I hope you think of its importance and the meaning behind the colors and especially the pledge. When we pledge to God and to our Christian community, it’s a big deal. I hope you pledge to Christian Flag at more than just VBS. Your craft this week is to color your own flag. Make your banner and put it somewhere you will see everyday and remember what Jesus did for you and how so many all over the world pledge to our Father in Heaven.
